How it Works

How it Works

The Atlantic Used Oil Management Association has a network of drop-off locations where you can take small amounts of used oil and antifreeze products. If you are a business (or other operation – such as agriculture, mining, fishing, forestry, etc.) that generates a large quantity of used oil and antifreeze products, you can have a Registered Collector pick them up at no cost to your business.

Who funds the program?

  • Environmental Handling Charges (EHC) fund the recycling program.
  • This charge is built into the cost of the product to cover the cost of collection and recycling.
  • This fee is not a government tax, but a charge paid by the first seller to fund collection of used oil and antifreeze, used oil filters, oil and antifreeze containers, and aerosol containers from generators (like garages, car dealerships and other industry operations) and consumers/households who have used oil and antifreeze products to dispose of.
  • EHCs collected provide the funding to the Atlantic Used Oil Management Association, which runs the collection and recycling programs for used oil and antifreeze products.
  • Find EHCs by product and province here.
